Music for the masses.

DIY Space for London -
‘Welcome to the Big Smoke’

Role

Logo design, colour palette

DIY Space for London (DSFL) launched a night of punk, rock and everything in between - needing branding and flyers to catch eyes, bang heads and fill the dancefloor.

With a wide array of bands from different backgrounds, disparate genres but a common love for good music in a safe, empowering space, it was important the branding for ‘Welcome to the Big Smoke’ encapsulated the values of those rallying under its banner.

The team wanted to include inspiration from “cut and paste style/ransom note art. Also, retro 50s/sci fi material, old school Hollywood stuff and old Soviet propaganda images.”

I knew I wanted to contrast the two segments of the logo; opting for typography reminiscent of a travel brochure or postcard for ‘Welcome to’, juxtaposing it with the bold, mismatched ransom-note styling for ‘The Big Smoke’.

The flyers needed to feel full and lively, convey all the necessary information, bear the WTTBS brand mark and most importantly, make an impact as standalone pieces of design work.

Guided by the teams keywords and desired imagery, I was able to develop a unique, recognisable style of flyer - a flamboyant, punchy look to match the tone of the events.
